Position Summary The ESOI Geoscience organization has an immediate opening for an experienced position in applied geomechanics. The role will involve pursuing and characterizing exploration and appraisal opportunities, developing production from new fields and maximizing economic recovery from existing fields. The selected candidate will provide geomechanics expertise to major ConocoPhillips assets globally. Additionally, in conjunction with the pore pressure, wellbore structure, wells / wellbore stability, reservoir engineering and petromechanics functions, the selected candidate will help to design, monitor and execute existing and future Technology Development programs for petroleum systems and reservoirs worldwide, which includes liaising with our BU shareholders for efficient and prudent adoption of emerging and impactful technologies. Reports to: Manager, ESOI Geoscience Structure, Stratigraphy and Pressure Primary Job Functions: Solve complex geomechanics problems associated with critical business decision for a diverse range of geologic settings, utilizing a combination of theoretical, laboratory and numerical modeling techniques, delivered collaboratively and integrated across functions. Conduct geomechanical evaluations with special emphasis on the integration of diverse datasets and fundamental measurements of mechanical rock properties. Perform integrated studies to predict nature of stress across a field and / or in a reservoir based on the structural framework and burial history. Ability to independently design and execute outcrop analog studies and integrate with core, seismic, and well data to build representative reservoir models. Build DFN models (FracMan, Petrel, or similar) for geomechanics and flow simulation. Analyze multiple data types to work within a multi-disciplinary team of geoscientists and engineers. Apply knowledge of in-situ stress estimation, caprock integrity analysis, containment assurance and rock mechanical testing and analysis including petromechanics workflows and lab protocols. Liaise with academic (JIPs), professional societies (e.g. ARMA, etc.) and vendor resources to support internal technology development themes related to CoP’s Sweet Spot Technology Development program. Participate in peer reviews and assists in support of geomechanical analyses. Teach internal inter-disciplinary training classes in the technical areas described above, and to promote leading practice workflows. Qualifications: Basic Requirements: Master's Degree of higher in Geoscience or Engineering related discipline. 5 years applying geomechanics in the context of field and reservoir characterization. Advanced level of experience in computational structural geology or computational geomechanics with applications to a broad range of reservoirs. Advanced level of experience in geomechanical characterization of unconventional reservoirs including but not limited to microseismic, DFIT analysis and interpretation, hydraulic fracturing, stress state, induced seismicity, mechanical stratigraphy. Ability to work effectively with a wide range of technical individuals from both the Geoscience and Engineering communities across the company. Demonstrated leadership, adaptability, teamwork, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to high safety and ethical standards. Candidates should be able to work effectively within and across diverse and inclusive team environments. Ability and willingness to travel 10% of the time annually Preferred: Legally authorized to work in the United States Ph.D. in a technical discipline. Ability to work effectively with a wide range of technical individuals from both the Geoscience and Engineering communities across the company. Demonstrated leadership, adaptability, teamwork, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to high safety and ethical standards. Candidates should be able to work effectively within and across diverse and inclusive team environments. Strong skills in structural framework modeling (3D MOVE, Petrel, TrapTester, etc.) and be able to integrate structural geologic models with stratigraphic, geophysics, reservoir and completion engineering models. Experience in interpretation and integration of image log and core interpretation techniques. Demonstrated working knowledge of industry-standard completion modeling applications. Demonstrated background in laboratory and/or field measurement of mechanical rock properties. Experience teaching basic to advanced topics in structural geology and geomechanics, both in the classroom and at the outcrop. ​Delivers results through realistic planning to accomplish goals ​Generates effective solutions based on available information and makes timely decisions that are safe and ethical.
